I have attended four Lobby Days in Harrisburg on behalf of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges. Each year, we talked to local elected officials about the benefit of the Commonwealth’s community colleges as a whole and BC3, of course, specifically.
This year’s event was quite different.
Over 300 students from Pennsylvania’s community colleges attended. We jammed the halls of the Capitol on April 5 along with hundreds of students from Penn State, Pitt, other PA State System of High Education institutions, and various high schools. Though representing different levels of education, we all had the same goal – for the state to restore all, or at least some, of our funding.
BC3 was represented by several outstanding students: Leigh Dillamon, Christina Voit, Samantha Sharpless, Kelsey Ferrick, Jacob Pflugh, and Lauren Danitella. They did a fantastic job telling our story.
In all, we spoke with Representatives Brian Ellis (also a BC3 Board of Trustee member), Jarret Gibbons, Dick Stevenson, and Mark Longietti. We also spent time with Senator Joe Scarnati and a representative from Senator Jane Orie’s office.
I was so proud of the job our student did. Furthermore, it was great to spend the day with such wonderful student body representatives.
