This summer, I had the opportunity to work with one of those terrific students.
Her name is Robin Peters. She is entering her final semester at BC3 before transferring to one of my alma maters – Clarion University of Pennsylvania – to study public relations/advertising. This summer, I taught her in an introduction to public relations course-by-appointment offering.
Robin, 20, is a tireless worker. Like most of our students, she juggles college life with work life. Her employment as a fourth-generation member of her family’s farm in Connoquenessing represents her passion.
In June, Robin competed for the National Ayrshire Queen in Branson, Mo. The competition at the National Ayrshire Convention included a written essay, personal interviews by three judges, and an intense critique by three other judges who watched contestants interact with convention-goers throughout the three-day event.
“It was super nerve-racking,” Robin told me. “During the week we helped the board members with the convention and assisted during silent auctions and ceremonies for the youth awards. Friday was a day full of farm tours and, in the evening, we had an impromptu question and we were then crowned.”
Robin competed against young women from Massachusetts, Missouri, New York and Wisconsin.
And like our wonderful college, she reigned champion!
The job of the National Ayrshire Queen is to represent the dairy industry – specifically the Ayrshire breed – on a national level. One of the seven major breeds of dairy cattle, Ayrshires are red-mahogany and white in color.
Robin will be attending national shows in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in addition to other events, such as fairs, in the coming year. She is the first person to bring this title to Butler County.
