News Update:
BC3 update on ransomware attack
December 8, 2021
Butler County Community College’s information technology division experienced widespread technical difficulties on Nov. 24. BC3’s IT staff discovered that certain devices connected to the college’s network had been encrypted by a ransomware program.
The college initiated its response plan.
BC3 isolated devices and shut off certain systems to contain the ransomware attack. The college then contacted a third-party forensic firm. BC3 continues to utilize and install enhanced security tools on devices across its network.
The third-party forensic firm is currently assisting the college with its investigation. BC3 also notified the FBI about the incident and is cooperating with its investigation.
Because normal communication platforms such as its email, website and phone system were impacted, the college used available platforms such as emergency texts, social media posts, updates on news.bc3.edu and robo calls to provide notifications and updates.
The college’s focus has been and continues to be on restoring all services needed by BC3 students.
BC3 resumed the last week of fall semester credit classes in remote or online formats on Monday.
Final examinations for the college’s fall semester start Dec. 13 and conclude Dec. 18. Final examinations will be held in the course’s previously scheduled format.
The college’s Winter Session now begins Dec. 20 and ends Jan. 25.
Because of the ongoing investigations, the college cannot provide further information about the ransomware attack.
