Butler County Community College will induct Michael Schmidt, left, Mackenzie Craig and Matthew Lobaugh into its Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of Fame on May 3. They are shown Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, in the Field House on BC3’s main campus in Butler Township.

(Butler, PA) Butler County Community College will induct May 3 into its Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of Fame a dual record-holder in women’s basketball and history-maker in 2019, a sergeant who returned from warfare and scored more than 1,000 points in men’s basketball, and an all-star two-sport captain who could drive baseballs and finesse jump shots.

The college will honor Mackenzie Craig, Matthew Lobaugh and Michael Schmidt during a ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. in the Field House on BC3’s main campus in Butler Township. The event is free and open to public.

The Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the quality and success of BC3 athletics.

BC3 will also recognize during the ceremony Troy Loughry, Johnna Hill and Josie Russo, chosen as National Junior College Athletic Association All-Americans in 2023 or in 2024.

Craig is a 2017 graduate of Karns City High School who studied criminology at BC3. Lobaugh graduated from Chaney High in Youngstown, Ohio, in 2002, and Schmidt, from Butler High in 1976. Both were general studies students at BC3.

“I never thought in a million years I would have my face on that wall.”

Hall of Fame members to increase to 25

Craig set BC3 women’s basketball records in 2019 with 1,277 points and 966 rebounds in her career. She was selected as an NJCAA All-American in volleyball in 2018 and became the first BC3 student-athlete to receive the prestigious postseason award in two sports when she was honored in women’s basketball in 2019.

Lobaugh returned to the United States in 2004 after serving in the Army Reserve in Tikrit during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Within the next two years he scored 1,088 points, led BC3’s men’s basketball program to its first winning records in eight seasons and was chosen as an NJCAA All-American.

Schmidt was a captain on BC3’s baseball and men’s basketball teams and was named as an all-Skyline Athletic Conference selection in both sports. He set basketball records in 1978 and helped to lead the baseball squad to a Skyline Athletic Conference title later that year.

BC3’s Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of Fame was dedicated in 2015. Its Class of 2025 will increase to 25 the number of plaques affixed to a wall behind courtside team seating areas inside the Field House.

“I played on that court,” Craig said. “I never thought in a million years I would have my face on that wall.”

Lobaugh said he is “very humbled” by his selection and Schmidt, that “It’s an honor to be mentioned with that group.”

“I knew I wanted to go to college and this was a great opportunity …”

Craig, a forward, played in 45 BC3 women’s basketball games. She scored at least 20 points in 39 games and had 28 or more rebounds in 20. She also helped to lead the Pioneers to the 2019 Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference title.

As a hitter or setter in volleyball, Craig had team-highs of 180 kills in 2017, and of 561 assists and 77 service aces in 2018. She also helped to lead the Pioneers to a combined 37-13 record in her two seasons, to WPCC crowns in 2017 and 2018 and to a NJCAA Division III Region 20 championship victory in 2018.

“My years at BC3 were incredible,” Craig said. “I look back on them and it definitely feels like a dream with just how awesome my experience was all-around. Honestly, some of the best years so far.”

Lobaugh chose to enroll at BC3 shortly after returning from Iraq.

“I had just gotten back from overseas and I did not know what I wanted to do with my life,” Lobaugh said. “I knew I wanted to go to college and this was a great opportunity to keep me busy and to play a sport I loved and keep my grades up.”

The guard-forward sparked the Pioneers to a 17-12 record in 2004-2005 and to a 17-13 finish in 2005-2006. The 34 victories were more than BC3 had in the previous four seasons combined. Lobaugh led the Pioneers with 546 points in his first season and with 542 in his second and ranks fourth on BC3’s men’s basketball career scoring.

Schmidt, a guard in men’s basketball, held records of 170 rebounds in a season and of 334 in a career in 1978. His 566 points in two seasons — 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 — were the fourth-most among players in the first 11 years of BC3’s program.

He batted .385 as a cleanup hitter and catcher for a baseball squad that finished 19-5 and as the SAC champion in 1978.

“I met a great group of guys with the coaches at BC3,” Schmidt said. “It was like a home. They accepted me and it felt like a family atmosphere. They took a personal interest in not just me but in anyone who went through there. It was just very welcoming.”

Loughry, a graduate of Grove City High, earned his second All-American award as a BC3 golfer in 2023. Johnna Hill in 2023 and Josie Russo in 2024 were named All-Americans in volleyball. Hill is graduate of Laurel High and Russo, of Freeport.

BC3 offers intercollegiate programs in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, and in volleyball. Its teams have won 59 WPCC titles and 28 NJCAA Division III Region 20 crowns and have competed 12 times in NJCAA Division III national championship tournaments. BC3 athletes have received 38 All-American awards.
